European tranport and environment ministers are to consider tougher controls on gas-guzzling cars, including road pricing schemes, in meetings this week.

Scotland on Sunday (p2) reported that the measures, drafted by the European Commission, also include forcing car makers to stop producing powerful cars.

EU ministers will be asked to endorse the plans by European transport commissioner Neil Kinnock and environment commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard at a conference in Chester this week.
