Councils need to take a long-term, strategic view if they are to successfully use European funding for tourism projects, the British Tourist Authority has said.

Association guidance stresses the importance of a market-led, sustainable attitude to tourism and the need to raise standards.

Welcoming the guidance, Local Government Association tourism chair Sir Ron Watson said: 'Tourism is not an EU competency as such, but one of the principle aims of the structural funds in particular is to develop economic regeneration, in which tourism has a critical role to play.'

The guidance is available from the British Tourist Authority, tel: 020 8563 3397.
