Tower Hamlets LBC has been criticised for paying its director of social services £60,000 to go to university until she reaches retirement age, reported Saturday's Times (p7).

Director of social services Sandra Wolmsley will receive her salary while she studies at the Institute of Local Government Studies at Birmingham University.

Tower Hamlets LBC chief executive Sylvia Pierce told the paper that Ms Walmsley's research is of value to the council. 'She will be engaged on research into relations between central and local government and the link between social and economic regeneration.'
