Local authorities are preparing to use new powers in the battle against neighbourhood noise, reports The Times (p41).

Tower Hamlets LBC, with one of the densest urban areas in the country, is to bring in a seven-night noise service. The council will adopt the Noise Act, empowering it to serve warning notices, issue fixed penalties and prosecute offenders.

The council is one of the first to adopt the act, and will get tougher with racial harassment complaints at the same time.
