Tower Hamlets in gasholder row

  • Comment
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has warned councils they must consult it on plans to build homes near hazardous installations, after becoming embroiled in a second row with Tower Hamlets LBC.

Tower Hamlets gave permission for flats near a Bethnal Green gasholder complex without informing the HSE, which later successfully appealed for the planning permission to be overturned (LGC, 31 January 2007).

Since then, a second residential project near the same installation has been approved by the council, which the HSE claimed it was not consulted on.

A Tower Hamlets spokeswoman said the council had followed correct procedure and was liaising with the HSE.
