Senior officers at Tower Hamlets LBC have accused councillors of pushing through cabinet-style leadership reforms too quickly, reports the East London Advertiser (p9).

Sylvie Pierce, chief executive, Christine Gilbert, head of education and Ian Wilson, head of social services, have criticised the speed with which the abolishment of the committee system has happened, saying it will undermine local democracy.

But one councillor said: 'They don't like it because it means councillors will be more involved in the decision-making process at a nuts and bolts level.

'It will ensure good leadeship, stop officers being obstructive anbd take out the red tape.'

Councillors are expecting their pay allowances to increase to an average of£7,500 a year, the paper points out.
