Essex CC trading standards officers responsible for animal welfare, complain they have been caught in the middle in the Brightlingsea live export protests, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p12).

The officers have fielded more than 150 written complaints from protesters.

One trading standards officer, who inspects the lorry loads of sheep in convoy and on board ship, says:

'We seem to be held up as being on the exporters' side, and I am working very hard to remain in the middle and simply enforce the law'.
