Investment in staff training means the private sector is beating public sector employers in reducing absenteeism, consultants say.

A survey by human resources consultancy MCG shows local government staff's average sickness rate is 7.2 days a year, compared with 6.1 days in private sector firms with 1,000 staff or more.

MCG partner Derek Burn said the private sector invested£188 per staff training day, more than twice as much as the public sector: 'That has to have an impact.'
