Councillors on the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority are demanding compensation for more than two weeks disruption to the region's train services, reports The Journal (p1).

The authority, which is made up of the five councils in Tyne and Wear - pays Regional Railways £2.2m to run trains on their behalf between Sunderland and Newcastle.

Regional Railways insist they have kept to their contract with the PTA because they have put on replacement buses for passengers when trains were cancelled due to staff shortages, reports the paper.
