Additional spending of 1bn ECU (over £800m) on the trans-European network could be part of a European initiative to boost employment, European Commission president Jacques Santer has said.

In a speech last week to the European parliament, Mr Santer said that in the fight against unemployment the added value of acting at EU level has to be harnessed effectively.

As well as staying on course for a single currency, and maintaining a stable macroeconomic framework, current structural actions needed to be built upon which could involve extra spending of 1bn ECU on trans-European networks and 700m ECU on research within existing budget outlines.
