A former senior fire officer has won a damages claim against the Strathclyde Fire Board for stress related illness, reports the Scotsman (p10).

Thomas Foulds was suing the fire board for£200,000 but the case was settled in the court of session with an undisclosed deal.

Mr Foulds attended 40 fatal accidents in comparison to the 10-14 fatalities most officers saw in their careers. He claimed the fire brigade did not have adequate procedures for dealing with traumatised officers and it should have realised the need for counselling.

Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union officer Danny Carrigan said the case showed employers that stress at work was an issue that needed to be taken seriously, and was 'of particular significance to the rescue services'.
