Commenting on the Local Government Association report* calling for travellers to pay council tax, shadow local government minister Eric Pickles said:

'The same rules should be applied fairly to all groups. This means that travellers should pay for the services they benefit from through council tax, just as everyone else does.

'It's clear that unauthorised travellers don't pay council tax either, even though councils must provide them with services, and are often left to foot the bill for cleaning up the site when the travellers move on.

'It is when people perceive that one group is getting 'special treatment' that tensions arise in communities. At a time when many people are struggling to meet higher and higher council tax bills, it simply isn't fair to let some people pay nothing at all.'
