A former chairman of Tendring DC has died. John Hewitt, 82, joined the council in 1976 as a Ratepayers councillor. During his 20 years with the council he also chaired the environmental health and control and protection committees.

His daughter, Sue Fairburn, told the EADT: 'He was political with a small pa and was very interested in local government, while trying to avoid party politics. He really enjoyed his council work.'

Tendring chief executive David Mitchell-Gears said: 'John Hewitt was a very able and respected councillor and he will be greatly missed by his fellow councillors and officers.'
