The Teacher Training Agency has welcomed the announcement by education and employment minister Eric Forth of proposals for a graduate teacher programme, which would be a new employment-based route into the teaching profession.

TTA's chief executive Anthea Millet said: 'If we are to realise our aim of raising levels of achievement in the classroom, we need to attract high calibre graduates into the profession. I am confident that this new initiative could make a significant contribution to doing just that.'

The TTA has assisted the department for education and employment in the design of the proposals and will have responsibility for the administration of the scheme.

Anthea Millett added: 'We need to attract graduates for whom the traditional routes into teaching are not, for whatever reason, appropriate. This new programme, currently the subject of consultation by the DfEE, is an exciting prospect.'
