Only a legal challenge can prevent Cleveland CC's demise, but that is a faint hope for the hundreds of county employees who fear for their jobs, reports The Northern Echo (p12).

Labour MPs Stuart Bell and Peter Mandelson abstained from last night's Commons vote which went 310-223 in favour of abolishing the authority.

Labour imposed a two-line whip in the vote, enabling MPs to vote with the government.

The paper reports all four district council leaders welcoming the outcome.

Hartlepool BC leader Bryan Hanson said there were now 15 months to work towards the new authorities and he was hoping for the whole-hearted support of the county council,
