Local Government Minister David Curry today announced two further appointments to the Local Government Commission following the announcement on 30 September that the commission's work was to be speeded up.

The two new commissioners, who will take up their duties on January 1, are: Christopher Chope OBE, former DoE minister, and Margaret Hodge MBE, former leader of Islington LBC and former ALA chair.

Mr Curry said: 'One of the existing commissioners, Howell Harris Hughes, is standing down because of other commitments.

'These appointments further broaden the range of interests and experience on the commission while maintaining the balance and independence which is essential to it in formulating its recommendations.

'This brings the commission's membership to 15, the maximum strength provided for in the Local Government Act 1992. It should enable the commission to make final recommendations to my Rt Hon Friend for all the remaining structural reviews in the shire counties by 30 December 1994.'
