Noise levels in more than half the homes in England and Wales exceed levels set by the World Health Organisation, reports The Independent (p13).

The figure rises to almost two-thirds at night, according to a study by the Building Research Establishment.

More than 90% of homes suffer from traffic noise although noisy neighbours caused more complaints than any other disturbance.

The paper reports that complaints have almost tripled in the last decade, now at almost 100,000 a year, says the Institute o Environmental Health Officers.
