Tyne and Wear Fire and Civil Defence Authority is levying a 17% increase in the amount it charges for its services, reported The Northern Echo (15 February, p3).

The authority says it has been forced into such a large rise because there is a£3m shortfall between what it says it needs to maintain services and the amount the government says it should spend.

The authority is also writing to the prime minister to ask for help in changing the funding system. Peter Young, chairman of the authority, said they faced an 'impossible situation' and risked being capped.
