Former North Tyneside Council elected mayor Chris Morgan (Con) has been charged with child pornography offences.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said Mr Morgan had been charged with five counts of making indecent images of children. He is due to appear before magistrates next week.

Mr Morgan's solicitor Mark Harrison said: 'Mr Morgan strenuously denies all of the charges that he faces.

'However, having had the accusations hang over him for many months, he now welcomes the opportunity to defend his good name in court, and remains confident he will be cleared.'
