Most of the events planned by Cardiff CC will be free. There will be a procession to the castle, a laser and fireworks display.

Glasgow has not officially announced its plans, but a city council spokeswoman said: 'All we can say is that once again we will be organising a spectacular Hogmanay event. It will be a big, big occasion.'

A spokeswoman for City of Edinburgh Council, said 'This year we are increasing our celebrations to seven days, starting on December 27. Previously it has been only four or five days. We call it our winter festival and it's about fun and entertainment.'

The highlight will be a strret party incorporating a fireworks display and an expected 180,000 revellers.

Newcastle upon Tyne plans a 'major city centre experience' with a range of 'high-quality events'.

In Liverpool, millions of pounds are to be spend on a 'River of Light', a giant plywood egg and specially-built marquee for the Cream nightclub to hold 30,000 people.
