Some regional areas in the United Kingdom are now among the poorest in Europe, according to a study of wealth differences between the EU regions published by the European Union yesterday.

The Guardian (p14) reports that some areas in Spain, such as Catalonia and Madrid, are richer than Merseyside and South Yorkshire, which are the two poorest areas in the UK, as well as Cornwall, Devon, Clwyd and the whole of Northern Ireland.

The Eurostat study shows that the UK has one of the lowest per capita incomes in Europe -£10,270, - with only Spain, Ireland, Portugal and Greece coming lower in the league table.
