Attempts by Conwy CBC to modernise its image by ditching the traditional chains of office may be abandoned, as the replacements do not command enough civic respect, according to The Western Mail (p5).

The council ordered lapel badges for its top councillors to give 'a more progressive outlook' than the usual heavy chains.

But the council chairman, Graham Rees, has said that he had had enough of being treated like a nobody at official functions.

Derek Barber, the chief executive, said: 'The current chairman has felt somewhat embarrassed on occasions that he has not been afforded due status as a result of the absence of a chain of office.'

Tomorrow the full council will be asked to choose an appropriate embelishment from the insignia which had been put into storage.
