The NUT is calling for joint industrial action to protect teachers.

NUT general secretary Doug McAvoy has expressed delight at the decision of the NASUWT to take industrial action to protect teachers from increased workload resulting from the funding crisis caused by the government.

The NUT has identified redundancies, non replacement of staff, fewer supply teachers, larger classes and increased teaching time as the consequences of the present school funding crisis.

Doug McAvoy has written to NASUWT general secretary Eamonn O'Kane proposing a meeting.

Mr McAvoy said:

'Our members will be involved in action in the same schools. They will benefit from joint or co-ordinated action and I hope Eamonn and I can meet at an early date to agree such action.'
