Unison, the T&G, and the Fire Brigades Union have called for London mayor Ken Livingstone to be readmitted by the Labour Party and adopted as its candidate for next year's mayoral election.

They and two other big unions - Amicus and the Communication Workers' Union - want existing candidate Nicky Gavron, who is running fourth in the polls, to step aside to become Mr Livingstone's running mate.

The party's ruling National Executive Committee - on which the five unions hold seven of the 32 seats - is expected to vote on whether to readmit Mr Livingstone on 16 December.
