On the eve of the budget, UNISON is calling for increased investment in public services to help rebuild the economy and create jobs.

UNISON general secretary Alan Jinkinson, said: 'The public sector has suffered enough. We want to see more public spending, an end to the squeeze on the public sector, and a halt to the public sector paybill freeze.

'What the country needs is job creating public investment. Tax cuts are unlikely to restore consumer confidence particularly if they are at the expense of the welfare state and the security offered when people become unemployed or sick.

'Tax cuts will not benefit the economy. UNISON wants to see policies aimed at creating good quality well paid employment. And investment in training schemes, especially for the long term unemployed.'
