Commenting on today's IDS survey of NHS chief executives' salaries, Bob Abberley, head of health of UNISON, said: 'This report reflects the glaring gap that persists between those at the top and staff on the wards.

'The average year-on-year increase of 5.2 per cent for trust chief executives was double the value of the staged rise for all other NHS employees.

'The findings underline that there is still a long way to go before equality of treatment becomes a reality across the health service workforce.'
