The EU court of justice has overruled Britain's claim that the UK is not bound by Euro-rules on a 48-hour working week.

The UK must comply with the rules by November 23 and was told to pay costs. The court only upheld Britain on a minor point concerning Sundays off.

UNISON general secretary Rodney Bickerstaffe said:

'This is great news for Britain's workers. This ruling will ensure that British workers are treated decently and equally with other European workers. We are pleased that the ruling recognises that people should not be made ill through working long hours without adequate rest breaks.

'We will be vigilant in making sure that the directive is implemented properly and on time. And we will take legal action against employers and the government if they fail to do so.'
