John Findlay, Unison's national officer for social services, comments on Stephen Dorrell's 'vague plans' to re-order social services:

'Our members in social services, from care assistants, to home helps and social workers, do not need to be told that their priorities are to look after children and other people at risk. They do not interfere unnecessarily in normal family life - they do not have enough time or resources to do that.

'They don't need lectures from Stephen Dorrell about how to do their job. What they need are adequate resources, staffing and training to deal with the problem families Mr Dorrell seems so concerned about. Our members are doing a vital job in ensuring the best possible support for children, the elderly and mentally ill in very difficult circumstances which are the result of the Government's own policies.

'We are deeply suspicious of Mr Dorrell's motives in his vague statement today. His review could be a way of trying to blame our members for the Government's own failure in providing real commitment and funding to care in the community and other social care.'
