Unison has won national single-union recognition from Capita, the support services company which has taken more than 2,500 public sector staff under contracting out.

Under the deal, the union gains the right to recruit, represent and negotiate for Capita staff throughout the UK on health and safety, equal opportunities, training, disciplinary and grievance issues.

Unison head of local government Keith Sonnet hailed the agreement as an opportunity to further the delivery of high-quality public services while protecting staff interests in public/private sector partnerships.

'It is part of our strategy of recruiting and organising members where services are privatised. This will help ensure privatised staff get union representation and are brought into the mainstream of the union,' said Mr Sonnet.
