A TUC disputes committee has ordered the Transport and General Workers Union to pay Unison£100,000 for poaching almost 700 members, reports The Herald (p3).
The award, one of the largest ever such compensatory payments, points up the growing potential for inter-union membership 'poaching' rows, and how they might be resolved.
The disputes committee found the TGWU was in breach of TUC rules in respect of 682 former Unison members employed by Middlesbrough BC who were 'knowingly and actively' recruited into the TGWU two years ago.
The binding award will go a long way towards meeting Unison's claim for compensation, totalling£133,002 - the equivalent of two years' contributions from the 682 workers.
