The 12 unitaries replacing Strathclyde RC are to jointly buy electricity, gas, stationery and equipment in a purchasing consortium with an annual budget of up to £150 million.

The regional council has a central purchasing department which spends £125m a year and costs £1.2m to run. The unitaries may also add food to the list of products.

Renfrewshire will be the lead authority. The consortium's staff will be on its payroll, but it will be run by a joint committee of representatives from the unitaries.
