Unitaries legal challenge fails

  • Comment
The last legal challenge to local government restructuring in most areas has been rejected by the Court of Appeal.

An appeal against a judicial review verdict in support of new unitary councils in Shropshire and Cheshire was unanimously rejected by Court of Appeal judges on Tuesday.

Albert Nugent (Lab), leader of Durham CC whose unitary ambitions hinged on the verdict, said: “[The decision] allows us to continue the work we have started with district colleagues to bring our respective organisations together and create a new unitary authority for the area.”

A proposal to split Bedfordshire CC into two unitaries is subject to a judicial review.
