The leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council has warned that the authority is likely to face 'some very difficult decisions indeed' after being told that balances from former Cleveland CC will only be 'a fraction of what had been expected'.

Cllr Brian Roberts said the four unitary authorities in the county had been told by Cleveland that it would hand over balances projected at £10m, but work on closing the old council's accounts now shows that figure will be less than £2m, and it could go lower.

Chief executive Andrew Kilburn said that work would start immediately on analysing the full implications of the situation which he described as 'very grave'.
