Derwentside DC is to scrap at least 76 jobs in an attempt to stay within government-set spending limits, reported the Northern Echo (April 26, p5).

A quarter of building and maintenance jobs are set to be lost, with workers given until Friday to apply for voluntary redundancy.

The council will make compulsory redundancies if too few apply. Council leader Alex Watson said the situation was particularly frustrating as it had£15m from the sale of land and houses which government rules forbade it to use. Some management job losses would follow.

GMB branch secretary Terry Scarr said the move was a shock, and came down to central government funding levels.
