Vale of Glamorgan Council chief executive David Foster has asked for early retirement, according to the Western Mail (p2).

It reports Mr Foster, 52, saying that recent critical reports by the district auditor were 'challengeable' but decided it was in the best interests of the authority for councillors to consider his retirement.

The Western Mail reports that Mr Foster was concerned to ensure that the council's attention was not diverted from key services and budget issues it needed to address.

His request will be discussed by the full council next week.
