Appeals for council tax valuation re-banding are costing £2.5m, it was claimed yesterday by the Labour MP for York, reports the Yorkshire Post (p6).

Hugh Bayley quotes £452,000 as the cost so far for appeals in North Yorkshire alone, and believes that the outstanding 17,654 county appeals will cost a further £2m.

He said: 'Council valuations were done in a mad panic as part of the Tory race against time to ditch the poll tax before the general election. Now yet again taxpayers will have to cough up for Government incompetence.'

A DoE spokesman said that the estimated cost per appeal is £115, but 'some are settled without reaching the tribunal stage which would make the cost lower.'
