The Chancellor was today urged not to put VAT on books and other reading materials because this would school spending.

The call came from the Association of Metropolitan Authorities.

Graham Lane, who chairs the AMA's education committee, has told the Chancellor: 'Resist extending the tax base in this way. As a former Secretary of State for Education you are, I am sure, all too aware of the importance of books and other publications in the transmission of knowledge, skills and understanding.'

The AMA predicts that if VAT was introduced it would also have a wider impact because it would hit family spending on books.
