'The Conservatives have convincingly taken three more council seats from Labour in Thursday's by-elections. Bromsgrove, Epping Forest and Amber Valley were won with substantial swings of 27%, 19% and 23% respectively. These are excellent results and now take Conservative gains since last May to over 100. The growth in support for the Conservatives is being sustained,' said Richard Ottaway, Conservative party vice chairman (local government). He continued:

'Disillusionment with Labour in local government is deepening and we will be keeping up the pressure on them.

'One of the Conservative gains from Labour was in Bromsgrove - an area which includes workers from Rover's Longbridge plant who are living under the threat of significant job losses as a result of the government's mishandling of the economy.'
