A legal challenge is expected to be launched today in an effort to halt allegedly unauthorised landfill operations.

The Herald (p7) reports that Lawyers acting on behalf of villagers in Kirknewton are due to lodge papers with the Court of Session seeking a judicial review of the status of the Kaimes landfill site.

Campaigners and some residents claim the site does not have the necessary planning permission from Edinburgh City Council for its dumping operations.

The council declined to comment on any impending court case, though a development sub-committee report from last month concludes there are no major problems at the dump and no immediate action will be taken.

However, it adds that planning regulations were breached by keeping temporary buildings longer than permitted.
