The Independent (p16) runs an editorial on the importance of voting in and engaging with the local elections on May 7.

The paper points out that in Melrose ward in Liverpool in the last local by-election, only 687 people out of an electorate of 11,000 bothered to vote and as a result Labour lost control of the council.

'This should have been a major, hard-fought political event. But because people became inured to the idea that they can make no difference hardly anyone bothered to turn out.'
