Parents of up to 500,000 four-year-olds will become eligible for nursery vouchers when education secretary Gillian Shephard announces this week that the controversial voucher pilot schemes are to be expanded nationwide, reported The Sunday Times (p12).
A £1.9m information campaign is planned to explain how the system will work.
The Sunday Telegraph reported (p5) that four out of five parents cashed in £1,100 nursery vouchers for their children in the first tests of the scheme the government hopes will boost its re-election prospects.
The most successful test area was Norfolk, where 97% of parents of four-year olds applied for the vouchers and 1,100 more children took up nursery education than in the previous year.
