The government has admitted that four year olds are not guaranteed a nursery place under the government's voucher scheme, reports the Independent (p5).

Schools minister Robin Squire added that some nursery schools will be able to operate for up to a year before they are inspected.

He insisted vouchers would increase the number of nursery places, but added: 'It is impossible to say that on 1 April next year every single four year old will have a place.'

The Financial Times (p1) reports that state funding for nursery education will be offered to an extra 12,000 pre-school groups next year, a large expansion of the existing provision.

The Guardian (p15) runs a feature arguing that it is time the left dropped its 'knee-jerk' opposition to selective schooling because parents will vote for choice.
