Local government employers yesterday announced a 1.4% pay rise for firefighters under their wage formula, ending the threat of a strike this autumn, the Financial Times reports (p10).

The paper says the settlement is lower than the government's 1.5% public sector pay limit and adds £4.50 per week to the current £305 per week for firefighters.
