Heather Wakefield has been appointed Unison's national secretary for local government.

She takes over next month from Malcolm Wing who has begun a new strategic role at the union. As national secretary, he will oversee the co-ordination of resources and service delivery within all of Unison's service groups - local government, health, higher education and business and environment (LGC, 19 April).

Ms Wakefield has gained a wealth of trade union experience in the past 14 years, working for NUPE and Unison. She is also assistant trade union side secretary of the National Joint Council for Local Government Services.

Ms Wakefield is to play a central role in Unison's best value and equal pay work. She said: 'My priorities are to close the gender pay gap and tackle low pay in local government.'
