The main front-runner is Rhodri Morgan, who was beaten by Mr Davies in the party elections seven weeks ago. The only other name in the hat at this stage is Wayne David, Euro-MP for South Wales Central and a supporter of Mr Davies.
Party activists were last night playing down the possible effect of Mr Davies's resignation as Welsh secretary on a council by-election being held in his Caerphilly constituency today, reports the Western Mail (p3).
