Welsh secretary William Hague has promised that a rural white paper for Wales will be published before the end of the year, reports BBC 4's Farming Today programme.

It will be a comprehensive statement of policy and the Welsh Office is inviting those with views on the subject to write to its Rural Development Division in Cardiff before October 13.

The department of the environment and the ministry of agriculture, fisheries and food have been working together since last year on an extensive joint consultation exercise with interested parties as part of their preparation for a joint white paper on rural policy in England.

Former Scottish secretary Ian Lang, now secretary of state for trade and industry, put in hand similar consultation, but John Redwood, when Welsh secretary, did not put in place a comparable exercise.
