A new art gallery commissioned by Walsall MBC is the focus of glowing praise in an architecture feature in The Guardian (sect 2, p12).

The gallery, to be built in the centre of town in a new central square, will be flanked not by chic cafes and imaginatively priced 'loft' apartments, but by a pub and new branches of Woolworth's and British Home Stores.

The architects, Caruso St John, have been given a free hand by their client and the building will be as far as possible from the 'design and build' stock local aothority building of the nineties.

The idea is that people out shopping will pop into the gallery perhaps to see and exhibition, perhaps to view a part of the permanent exhibition, or simply to take a break in the rooftop cafe.
