Wandsworth LBC has given Serviceteam - a contractor run by people connected with Labour run Lewisham - 12 months notice to quit after being inundated with complaints about its running of the refuse contract.

The Independent reports (p2) that Phil Walker, a director of Serviceteam, csaid the company was losing around £1m a year on the contract, which still had five years to run, and had come to a settlement with the council.

Union officials said the contract constituted a 'spectacular failure' of the compulsory competitive tendering policy, the paper reports.

Wandsworth said is was only the second time out of 110 contracts that this had happened.
