Wandsworth LBC is to review its refuse collection contract with ServiceTeam.

The council's leisure and amenities committee meets on Monday to decide on one of four options, including termination of the contract or what is being termed 'a fresh start' with the same contractor.

A ServiceTeam spokesman insisted problems surrounding the loss-making contract could be overcome but councillors, including members of the ruling Conservative group, are unhappy with the level of public complaints.

ServiceTeam, set up by former Lewisham managers with Labour Party connections, settled a three-month dispute with the GMB union in the borough earlier this year and claims to have improved its performance. The council refuses to divulge exact figures on grounds of commercial confidentiality.

Wandsworth's decision could have a knock-on effect in other London boroughs. Lambeth is due to make a decision on externalisation in the next few days, with ServiceTeam, which has just won a contract with Camden, one of three bidders.
