Watford council chief to step down

  • Comment

Alastair Robertson is to step down as managing director of Watford Borough Council and secretary of the Association of Local Authority Chief Executives (ALACE).

Mr Robertson, who is 60 this summer, said he wanted to spend more time with his family and felt that he could only improve his work-life balance by getting “off the roundabout” after 21 years as a chief officer.

He said he expected to leave Watford at the end of September, while ALACE would select a new honorary secretary at its annual general meeting in July.

Mr Robertson said that while he was proud of what had been achieved at Watford under his stewardship, the job had “taken its toll” on family time.

“My intention is to work parttime within the public sector on a consultancy basis,” he said. “I am a qualified executive coach and leadership mentor and I have a lot of experience of dysfunctional councils.

“I would like to put my extensive experience to good use but be free from the day-to-day responsibility of running a multi-service organisation.”
